Diary of John Hartwell Cocke, Jr. [manuscript] 1826.

Cocke's diary, entitled Notes of a trip to the Union Canal and up the Schuykill and transcribed by T. Gibson Hobbs, Jr., describes his trip through Pennsylvania in 1826 to examine its Union Canal system. He writes about the various towns, weather, soil types, countryside, topography of the rea and the canals. He furnishes details about the construction of canals, the cost of materials and labor, size, and work procedures, much of which he acquired from the engineers Mr. Hage and Mr. Guilford.
